Campaigns and Advocacy Coordinator – Detroit Justice Center
The Detroit Justice Center (DJC) seeks a full-time Campaigns and Advocacy Coordinator to build the power of our clients and community partners to create systemic change in the criminal justice system. DJC is founded on the belief that we cannot build cities that work for everyone without remedying the impacts of mass incarceration and transforming our justice system. In 2019, we will expand our advocacy and coalition-building work, executing campaigns to address cash bail and pretrial detention, criminal record expungement, and more.
The Campaigns and Advocacy Coordinator will co-design and execute campaigns that center the needs, wisdom, and vision of our clients and community partners. Tactics may include but are not limited to popular education and people’s forums, coalition building, community surveys, policy advocacy, direct action, and cultural organizing. DJC works in close collaboration with movement-building organizations on a local, statewide, and national level, and the Campaigns and Advocacy Coordinator will play an integral role in maintaining our organizational partnerships. The Campaigns and Advocacy Coordinator will also work with DJC’s Communications Officer to develop media strategies that help our clients and partners tell their stories and advance their demands.
Co-design a strategic plan, specific action steps, and related timetables for campaigns addressing state-level policy priorities;
Maintain relationships and attend meetings of related advocacy groups to share ideas, exchange information and concerns, and coordinate advocacy efforts;
Support the development and planning of projects, events, and workshops;
Collaborate with Communications Officer to coordinate media outreach and digital organizing that promotes DJC’s policy priorities, including through press releases and other media events;
Assist with on-going legislative research and analysis;
Help to integrate campaigns and policy initiatives with other DJC initiatives and events;
A minimum of 2-3 years experience in legislative, electoral, or political grassroots campaign development and implementation;
Experience in facilitating community meetings, popular education trainings, and workshops;
Experience in designing and analyzing community surveys. Familiarity with participatory action research methodology a plus;
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking;
Substantial knowledge of criminal justice issues, mass incarceration, and related policies;
Enthusiasm for working at a progressive new organization;
Strong community organizational and relationship building skills and ability to work with volunteers;
Demonstrated ability to work independently, adapt quickly, and act decisively;
Excellent time management with an ability to produce high quality work on tight deadlines;
Proficiency with project management software.
The Campaigns and Advocacy Coordinator is a full-time position, supervised by the Founder & Executive Director of the Detroit Justice Center.
