Celebration of Housing Dignity for Family Illegally Foreclosed Upon
Coalition shines a light on solution to Detroit’s ongoing foreclosure crisis
DETROIT – The Beal family and their allies will celebrate the family’s overcoming the illegal taking of their home with the move into their new home. Sabrina Beal, mother of two, will speak at a press conference calling for Mayor Mike Duggan, and Wayne Country Treasurer Eric Sabree to work towards housing dignity and restoration for the thousands of other Detroit families whose homes should never have been taken.
Beal worked with the Coalition to End Unconstitutional Tax Foreclosure to find and secure a home. She and her allies will call on Detroit and Wayne County to take responsibility for illegally removing thousands families from their homes and to make similar compensations for those residents.
A representative from Congress Woman Rashida Tlaib’s office will speak as well as Sonja Bonnett, director of Housing and Dignity and Restoration for the Coalition. The Bonnett family home was also restored with the Coalition’s help after their original property was illegally taken.
The Beals and Bonnetts are among thousands of Detroit families whose properties were unconstitutionally over assessed by the City of Detroit which inflated their Wayne County property tax bills beyond their abilities to pay. Worse yet, based on their incomes, both families were eligible for but not made unaware of Detroit’s property tax exemption from the which would have prevented foreclosure.
