This workshop will focus on ways we can create just and safe cities and overcome mass incarceration by investing in neighborhoods and community initiatives, while divesting from prisons. Attendees will learn about the various legal barriers and collateral consequences city residents face as the result of their system involvement. They will also learn about ways the Detroit Justice Center is working to help our clients overcome these obstacles through innovative lawyering. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to brainstorm community-centered investments that promote restorative justice, safety, education, and employment, as alternatives to the proposed $533 million Wayne County Criminal Justice Complex.
