The Detroit Justice Center (DJC), an innovative community law practice opened in 2018, seeks a full-time Paralegal. DJC is founded on the belief that we cannot build cities that work for everyone without remedying the impacts of mass incarceration and transforming our justice system. This position is a unique opportunity to support DJC in its mission to deliver community lawyering services, create economic opportunities, and promote just cities.

Position Overview:

The Paralegal will provide substantive and administrative support for the organization’s legal services and economic equity practice areas. The Paralegal will help returning citizens and other court-involved clients resolve problems with attaining proper identification, registering credit report disputes, reconciling conflicts with the Social Security Administration regarding their social security numbers, pursuing criminal record expungements, and more.

Key Responsibilities:

Support for Legal Staff

  • Maintain and update case management database and help keep client records in order;

  • Finalize, file, and serve legal documents when needed;

  • Request various types of records;

  • Preparation and editing of documents for filing, including: proofreading, cite checking, bluebooking, formatting, producing tables of contents, etc;

  • Creating, organizing, and maintaining case files and contacts;

  • Computing and calendaring court deadlines;

  • Communicating with courts, clients, opposing counsel, and government officials as requested or approved by attorneys;

  • Participating in conference calls and meetings when relevant to the position and/or assigned projects.


  • Must have a BA or paralegal certificate and/or at least two to three years of experience as support staff working under the supervision of attorneys;

  • Experience working in a new non-profit and/or at a public interest law firm is helpful;

  • Experience drafting legal documents;

  • Excellent research, analytical, writing, and computer skills (word processing, databases and spreadsheets, etc.);

  • Ability to organize, set priorities among multiple assignments, meet deadlines, and function calmly under pressure;

  • Must have impeccable attention to detail;

  • Must be resourceful and have the ability to anticipate needs and work independently;

  • Must be able to manage sensitive and confidential information with integrity;

  • Demonstrates an awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and orientations;

  • Commits and contributes to the creation of a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work culture that encourages and celebrates differences; and

  • Knowledge/experience of justice issues and passion for DJC’s mission.
